Tell me and I forget, teach me and I remember, involve me and I learn
In the words of Carolyn Edwards of Pitcher Partners after attending an EQiLead Workshop where we explored Adaptive Leadership.
On reflection of the day that I spent with Vicki and her horses, a particular saying keeps coming to front of mind by Benjamin Franklin
“Tell me and I forget, Teach me and I remember, Involve me and I learn.”
Vicki’s Leadership Course with her horses could not have provided any better hands on training to re-enforce many important leadership attributes..
I have attended a few Leadership Course in my career, and while many courses deliver the same messages, to be able to practice and experience the most important aspects of Leadership by interacting with horses who you can’t talk to and it can’t verbally respond to you can be very confronting and rewarding.
The way that Vicki made the connections between what is being experienced in the yard with the horse and what occurs in the workplace was invaluable. The visual learning and direct participation with the horses was training that cannot be delivered in a ‘typical’ training session in a corporate office work environment.
You need to experience it for yourself to understand how much your interactions with a horse are parallel to interactions with any of your fellow work peers (no matter what level of experience they have ) and also family members at home.
Dare to try something different and go beyond your comfort zone. All part of being a great Leader.
